International Merchants - Should You Focus on Internet Accessibility?

Even though international merchants are still overcoming the hurdles of doing business online, I don't think the cost of internet access in various countries all over the world will be one of the biggest problems. The average American pays a few hundred dollars or less for monthly wireless internet access. Elsewhere it's even cheaper (yes, even in underdeveloped countries). Broadband is also very cost effective for businesses because so many computers can share internet access for the price of one. Wi-fi hotspots are free. If anything is expensive, it's probably in internet cafes where people drop by in dire need of access.

In fact, if you're an international merchant you should be aware that you can sell products all over the world -- internet access not an issue. The real issue is whether people can afford computers, laptops, and other mobile gadgets that enable them to get internet access. Computers get expensive, parts need to be upgraded, and other high tech wireless internet-enabled gadgets are beyond the reach of the ordinary shoppers.

If this barrier can be crossed, then international merchant ecommerce is on its way to maturity. Imagine the future. Anyone with a wi-fi enabled mobile device can shop for whatever he needs online. Infrastructure is smooth and delivery of goods is efficient. And as of now, digital files are taking the first big steps.
If you've heard of Amazon's "Kindle", then you know exactly what I'm talking about. The device can let you buy and read books on the spot. As of this moment, it's sold out in Amazon.com's store. Can you say "convenient"? We can't wait to see more new stuff in the future.
